Description of the talk:
Christopher Packard will discuss his new book, Mythical Creatures of Maine as we take a tour through the deep history of Maine through stories about mysterious, outlandish, and terrifying creatures, cryptids, and beings. Learn how a biologist and science teacher came to write a book about mythical creatures as we survey the creatures of folklore that populate our state. From Wabanaki creatures to modern cryptozoology and everything in between including sailors, French Canadian settlers, lumberjacks, and guides we'll look at creatures known to the people who know the land and water best. We will discuss how and if these creatures really exist as well as the importance and meaning of cultural stories as we discuss how these beliefs and stories are related across cultures in Maine and around the world.

About the Author:
Christopher Packard is the author of Mythical Creatures of Maine, a field guide and encyclopedia to the creatures and being found in the legends and folktales of all the cultures who have called Maine home. Packard, a resident of Hampden, has been a Bangor science teacher for the past 15 years, spending time as a teacher at John Bapst Memorial High School before moving to Bangor High School in 2015. Previously Packard worked as professional botanist, outdoor educator, and ecological restoration technician for parks, private firms, and nature centers. He first heard stories of some of these creatures as a boy from his grandfather, a longtime Piscataquis County guide and he has been exploring nature and collecting mysterious stories ever since.
