About the workshop

Robert Shetterly, portrait artist and creator of the series Americans Who Tell the Truth, will offer a portrait drawing and narrative writing workshop.  Shetterly will speak about the origin and the mission of this project and will then guide people to create a self-portrait and brief narrative about an event, person, and/or belief that guides them in their journey.

Participants will view Shetterly’s portraits, hear how he selects portrait subjects, learn his process for painting a portrait, and then create their own representation of their journey and story.

Workshop participants will think about this essential question as they create their art and narrative.

How do art and narrative/story combine to open discussions to reach understanding? What understandings can be reached?
Participants will create a self-portrait and write companion narratives about an event, person, and/or belief that helped them become who they are today. Portraits and narratives will be displayed at the library to promote and allow conversation and discussion about identity, actions, and the common good.
